Mother Bear or Mother Hen?
May 16, 2008
Last week I stared down a man at a restaurant, who unwisely chose to stare at my special-needs son. Okay, so maybe said son was pacing during dinner. And maybe said man was just watching the show. However, some instinct deep within put me into fight-or-flight mode. I stared at him until I caught his eye and he looked away. Another of my kids said, “Way to go, Mom!” Mission accomplished.

An hour ago, my husband and I returned from a day trip to pick up our firstborn from college. He’s done with his freshman year. I can hardly believe it. On the drive home, my husband asked how different emotions seemed from 9 months ago, when we dropped him off early for soccer camp. My firstborn said, “Shouldn’t you be asking Mom that question?”
I was quick to point out that I may have been sad, but at least I wasn’t chicken!
Speaking of chickens, my chicks are finally all back in the nest. My heart is full.

Awww, I love it! You just summed up the “whole” of motherhood. Way to go on the staring him down thing! Plus, I especially love that you can be a momma bear for other children as well! Keep up the good work.
